Artist Statement
My work is based around a personal inquiry, I look inward at my own experience of encountering myself, my traits and my personality reflected back at me in my younger sister. I wish to convey the impact and influence we have on the young people that surround us in our lives through my practice.
I usually begin making through using photography as a form of visual research which then evolves, combining the imagery i've collected to form nostalgic, thought provoking, prints, drawings, digital collages and 3D forms.
Most recently I have been using elements of nature as symbolism in my work alongside portraits of my younger siblings as well as self portraits. Imagery of daisy chains, rings of trees and finger prints are recurring throughout my work. The natural forms are intended as visual representations of my thoughts on themes surrounding elders passing on traits & characteristics to the younger generation. The seemingly meaningless task of joining the stalks of the daisies together one by one, a ritual being passed on without thought, blindly absorbed by the learner, whether good or bad.
My work explores how we form as individuals through highlighting the contrast between the fragility of the daisy chain with the strength of the tree rings. Bringing to light the similarities between them. How both are impacted and shaped by their surroundings, like young children, growing and developing in response to elements in their environment.
